Keep Austin Weird
We can not possibly spend time in Austin, Texas, without hearing his oft-repeated motto: "Keep Austin Weird. "The term has been coined by an Austin Community College librarian who uttered while calling a radio show, has spread like wildfire and was picked up and used by the Austin Independent Business Alliance as a means of encouraging support local businesses.
Like most slogans, "Keep Austin Weird" has a basis in reality. Austin is many things: politics, dynamic, intelligent and fun, but it is also undeniable that weird.
For example, where else in the world can you find a vagrant cross-dressing, wearing high heels and running for mayor? Leslie Cochran, a man who was nicknamed "The Queen of Austin" is one of its most beloved characters, so beloved, indeed, that local stores sell "Leslie What to Wear fridge magnets" that act as a magnetic version of a paper doll kit.
Leslie is not the only local attraction that keeps the town interesting. It is Hippie Hollow, the only "clothing optional" beach in all of Texas, and the fact that Austin, in addition to being the state capital, is expected be the capital and Frisbee Golf. Also consider the Alamo Drafthouse, a series of theaters theaters-restaurants-slash-slash-performance, which has a calendar Eclectic and funny events promotions to keep customers coming back for more. There are not many places where you can attend a screening of "Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle", which includes all the miniature hamburgers you can eat.
Down in South Austin, you can visit the famous Cathedral Junk, "which began in 1988 and built a network of throwing items like bottles, bumpers and wheels (oh my god!). Despite its appearance, Cathedral is structurally sound, through inspection of the city every year. Although in this part of the city, it is also the Museum of Ephemerata, allowing these items weird that the last cigarette Marilyn Monroe never smoked.
Every year Austin hosts gatherings of bikers, burlesque shows, rodeos, political demonstrations, theater events, street markets, entertainment and music festivals, poetry readings and barbeques. There's really never a dull moment.
And yet, it may simply be people who keep it in Austin weird. Austinites, both indigenous and self-made, constantly contributing to the atmosphere of the city, full of charm, fun and energy. They are the ones who buy into the funky shops, those attending the shows crazy, and those who are proud to occupy such a unique place in the world
